JULY 2010
- Year 10 & Year 11 Parents 2010/11 - URGENT INFORMATION FOR NEXT YEAR!
Controlled Assessment has replaced old style coursework in all GCSE courses. Students now have to complete controlled assessment in school over a fixed number of hours.
This affects all subjects so at any point during the school year, Year 10 and Year 11, students are likely to be doing controlled assessment in one subject or another. It is therefore vital that Year 10 and Year 11 students are not taken out of school for holidays or any other activities. Missing controlled assessments will seriously affect final grades for students, as controlled assessment is worth between 20% and 50% of GCSE courses depending on the subject.
Please support your son/daughter's achievements at GCSE by not arranging trips etc in school time.

The Kimberley School gets its best ever results
It was a delight to see the sheer joy on the faces of so many of our students on results day. They had every right to be pleased with themselves after the hard work they put into their studies during last year.
The GCSE results showed a dramatic improvement, from 65% 5+ A*-C last year to 85% this year!!

Swine Flu
Advice from DCFS - Message from Secretary of State, Ed Balls:
We have been closely monitoring the spread and severity of swine flu over the school holidays. The latest scientific advice to the Government is that individual school closures are now of limited benefit in stopping the spread of disease.
Given the mildness of the virus, the expert medical advice is that there is no good reason for schools to remain closed after the summer holiday. We therefore expect all schools and early-years and childcare settings in England to reopen as planned at the beginning of the new term.
However, it is still essential that adults or children with flu-like symptoms should stay away until they are free of those symptoms. They should contact the National Pandemic Flu Service on 0800 1513513 or at www.pandemicflu.direct.gov.uk
We would appreciate it if you could please ensure that all emergency contact details are up to date with the school.

EU Post 16 Students
Kimberley is joining a scheme for European Union Students who want to study in Britain. 16 - 17 year old students would come to Britain to study for AS Level GCEs. We need host families in the Kimberley area who would be willing to accommodate either male or female students for a year from August to July 2009-10. There is a fee paid to host families by Education First, the firm that organises the placement.
If you are interested please contact us at schooloffice@kimberleyschool.co.uk or on 0115 9387000. We will get back to you as soon as possible. If you need further information contact Anna Woodworth, 6th Form Learning Mentor.

The Kimberley School no longer requires significant improvement!
That was the message from the Ofsted inspection team yesterday as they lifted our Notice to Improve. Parents, carers and friends of our school should know that Ofsted found much good teaching and none that was inadequate. They recognised our rapid rate of improvement and saw many good features of the school’s work.
Many people have contributed to this great achievement – none more so than our students. Well done to them and to their parents and carers for their support of the students and the school.

Inspection news!
We are delighted to welcome Ofsted to the school on Monday 2nd and Tuesday 3rd of February. We believe the school has come a long way since our “Notice to Improve” a year ago. If inspectors agree, they will remove the notice from our school. They are keen to hear your views to support their judgements, so please do your best to return the Ofsted questionnaires so they get the full picture.
